The world is facing an unprecedented global health, social and economic emergency as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tourism is among the most affected sectors in Malaysia with airplanes on the ground, hotels closed, travel restrictions put in place and no mass gatherings. Tourism industry sectors including airlines, attractions (such as national parks, protected areas and cultural heritage sites), business events, cruise lines, hotels, live events, online travel organisations, restaurants, tour operators, transportation and travel agencies.

​In conjunction with after one year of movement control order (MCO) – March 18, 2021 (Thursday), BERJAYA University College is organising Relook, Restrategise, Revitalise Virtual Forum to learn from the past, manage the present, and create a better future. Therefore the virtual forum shall include four forum sessions for a few selected panelists, who are the key players from business events, hospitality, live events and tourism industry meet virtually to discuss and exchange ideas on a given topic, mainly to share about their challenges under the internal and external pressure, how they change to succeed in the new normal and also the future of industry practice.

​RE Virtual Forum is targeted towards students, associations, event suppliers, government agencies, travel agencies, hoteliers, meeting planners, venue owners, destination management companies, non-governmental associations, concert organisers, exhibition organisers, convention organisers, convention bureaus and more.

Redesigning the Future of Business Events: Engagement, Environment & Experience

Business events play a vital role in the development of global trade and help to enrich intellectual engagement. Malaysia’s business events industry is expected to generate more than RM3.9 billion in gross national income and bring in 2.9 million visitors by 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic over 1,250 business events in Malaysia have either been postponed or cancelled, resulting in an unprecedented economic loss of over RM1.75 billion. This topic aims to discuss the engagement, environment, and experience via physical, hybrid, and virtual events. It is the fastest way for businesses to connect with each other and rebuild the economy again.

Readapt to Remain Resilient: A Hospitality Perspective

Hospitality industry is one of the fastest and largest rising sectors in Malaysia has been contributing through economic development and providing job opportunities. However, during the movement control order (MCO) period, the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) has estimated a loss of RM560.72 million in revenues. A sample size of 56,299 workers in the hotel industry, 2041 staff were laid off, 9,773 (17%) were asked to take unpaid leave and 5,054 (9%) got pay cuts. Thus, the industry is now being deeply struck and affected due to the unprecedented challenges from the pandemic.  This topic aims to assist the businesses in the hospitality industry to reshape and readapt the new norms during the pandemic through the exploring journey and discovery of innovative ways.

Reimagine to Reignite Live Events Industry

Live event industry has contributed to Malaysia’s economy as it engages memorable experiences to the audience. Unfortunately, all large-scale events and mass gatherings have been postponed and cancelled following the increase in COVID-19 positive cases. An estimated total of RM300 million had been lost in the live events industry up to August 2020. However, there is no denying that the pandemic has changed how the industry operates. The topic aims to discuss how members of ALIFE reimagine and reignite live events experiences to overcome the new norm and return stronger again.

Reshaping the Demand of Tourism in the New Norm & Beyond

The tourism industry is one of the largest and fastest-growing sectors in Malaysia and is also loved by tourists for a visit in South East Asia. Malaysia welcomed a massive 13.35 million foreign tourists and reported a rise of 6.8% in tourist receipts thus contributing RM41.69 billion to the revenues of the nation during the first half of 2019. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, losses suffered by the country’s tourism and culture industries in the first half of 2020 amount to around RM45 billion. This topic aims to discuss what are the strategies that can be used in reshaping the demand of tourism in the new norm and beyond the traditional method we travel as well as to improve the consistent extraordinary experience.
